The incident occurred in Bomono, Dibombari Subdivision of Moungo Division in the Littoral Region, about 20 kilometres west of Douala. Although the tragedy left no human casualty, some of the 70 passengers lost valuable belongings. According to some of them, the vehicle caught fire just minutes after smoke billowed from it, probably due to a mechanical glitch in the engine.

As the flames increased, it became dangerous for other automobiles to pass by. Several other vehicles were held in traffic congestion at both ends of the highway for hours as a result of the accident. After a long wait for the fire to subside to no avail, vehicles that had queued up following the congestion took the risk of driving by.
