The government of Japan has put at the disposal of Cameroon some FCFA 7.7 billion to finance the project for improvement of the fishing unloading facility and fish market of Youpwe in Douala. Exchange of official documents to confirm the disbursement of the funds provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) took place in Yaounde, Monday December 11, 2017.

While the Minister of the Economy, Planning and Regional Development, Louis Paul Motaze represented the government of the Cameroon, the Japanese Ambassador to Cameroon, Kunio Okamura sat in for his country.

The funds, which come as Japan’s commitment to support economic growth in Cameroon, will be used to put in place modern fishing infrastructures at the Youpwe fish market site. Ambassador Kunio Okamura said the structures in view will meet international standards.

According to Minister Louis Paul Motaze, once the project is completed, it will ameliorate the working conditions of fishermen in the community as well as improve the quality of fish sold to consumers. The project will also improve on security and efficiency of loading/unloading operations as well as boost sales conditions of fish at the wharf and the Youpwe fish market.

While thanking the Japanese government on behalf of Cameroonians, Louis Paul Motaze said the project will be of great socio-economic impact, citing an anticipated increase in the volume of fish trade between Cameroon and her neighbours Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea. He expressed the wish that Limbe could be the next beneficiary of such infrastructures, after Kribi and Douala.

The intervention at the Youpwe fish market falls in line with Japan’s engagement to support economic diversification, in conformity with the plan for the putting in place of declaration of the Sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD VI).

Kunio Okamura expressed the wish that the cooperation between both countries should not end in the fisheries sector but extend to other infrastructural projects, agriculture, environmental protection, among others.
