The Lionesses got up to a promising start at the ongoing women world cup in Canada. In their first outing in the tournament yesterday, the Lionesses trounced Ecuador, 6-0 to take a good option towards qualifying for the knock out stage of the competition. The scintillating victory of the Lionesses is not special only in terms of the score but also by their spectacular play style as they demonstrated tactical and physical superiority in the game winning all the duels and provoking danger in the Ecuadorian vital area each time they took possession of the ball.

Whereas Ecuador was far from ridiculous as match statistics demonstrate they had 51 per cent possession of the ball and made some dangerous incursions into Cameroon’s vital area in the opening minutes of the game. But Cameroon took ascendancy and dominated till the end of the encounter.

The first goal came from Ngono Mani who neatly slit in a rebound from the goalkeeper from a Gaelle Enganamouit shot at the 34th minute. Gaelle Enganamouit was to appear on the score board two minutes later through a personal action.  After receiving a long pass from the back, she dismissed both the last defender and goalkeeper to make it wt for Cameroon. Captain Manie got the third goal for Cameroon through a penalty kick after foul play on Aboudi Onguene just before the half time break at the 44th minute.

Upon resumption of play for the second half, it was Cameroon again which was enterprising when spectators expected the action to come from Ecuador and logically obtained a fourth goal at the 73rd minute from the penalty spot again, this time transformed by Gaelle Enganamouit who was the lady of the match. Aboudi Onguene scored again from the penalty spot to crown her good form of the day while a third penalty from Enganamouit sealed the fate of Ecuador.

It is worthy to note that the score is the best result that any national football selection has ever obtained in any international competition. The victory places Cameroon on top of the group on goal advantage after the defending champions, Japan narrowly edged Switzerland 1-0 in the other group encounter. The Lionesses will face Japan in their second outing on June 12th and a victory of draw will be enough to enable Cameroon sail through to the second round. Meanwhile the performance of the Lionesses has increased their approval rating given that the other two African representatives have not been able to do better. Cote d’Ivoire was humiliated 10-0 by Germany while Nigeria pulled a one-all tie with Sweden.
