Justice Mauritanie : Le parquet exige 20 ans de prison pour l’ex-président Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, déjà condamné pour enrichissement illicite

Le parquet a déposé un recours en cassation pour alourdir à 20 ans de prison la peine de l’ancien président Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz (2008-2019), condamné à 15 ans de réclusion mi-mai pour enrichissement illicite, rapporte l’AFP ce lundi, citant une source judiciaire.

Un procès sous haute tension

L’ex-homme fort de Nouakchott, jugé depuis novembre 2024 pour abus de pouvoir et blanchiment, avait écopé en première instance de 5 ans de prison avant que sa peine ne soit triplée en appel. La cour a également confirmé la confiscation de ses biens et sa déchéance des droits politiques, dans un procès retentissant qui a secoué la classe politique mauritanienne.

Un système de corruption à grande échelle ?

Aziz n’était pas seul sur le banc des accusés. Une dizaine de hauts responsables, dont deux ex-Premiers ministres, des ministres et des hommes d’affaires, ont comparu pour trafic d’influence, détournements et blanchiment. Une affaire qui révèle les rouages d’un système opaque, où pouvoir et argent se mêlent dangereusement.

The ex-strongman of Nouakchott, on trial since November 2024 for abuse of power and money laundering, was initially sentenced to 5 years in prison before his term was tripled on appeal. The court also upheld the confiscation of his assets and a ban on political rights in a landmark case that has shaken Mauritania’s political elite.

Aziz was not alone in the dock. A dozen high-ranking officials, including two former prime ministers, ministers, and businessmen, faced charges of influence peddling, embezzlement, and money laundering. The trial has exposed an opaque system where power and wealth dangerously intertwine.
