In a letter dated Feb 12 to the SDF chairman, Elisabeth Tamanjong, departing Secretary General of the Social Democratic Front SDF, has said her resignation was partly informed by the party’s departure from the core values and principles that it espoused in the 90s.

The resignation of Tamanjong as Secretary General of the SDF, which party Chairman John Fru Ndi said during a National Executive Committee meeting Saturday Feb. 14 that it was accepted, took many by surprise, but not really a big shock to those who have been aware of recent wrangling between her and the SDF hierarchy.

 

Tamanjong states in her resignation letter that the SDF has continuously drifted from its initial vision of true democratic practice preached at the party’s creation in 1990. She said values and principles of the party such as social justice, equal opportunities, transparency and accountability are no longer practiced in the SDF.

 

She argues that the three power organs of the party – the National Executive Committee, NEC, National Advisory Committee, NAC, and National Investiture Committee, NIC, should play complementary roles, and chaired by different people. This, she said, will give room for checks and balances that do not presently exist in the party.

 

“I became a member of the SDF in 1991. Since then I have occupied several positions of responsibility – from the Centre Provincial Treasurer in 1991 through many other positions at different times to Secretary General in 2006 till date. Sadly enough, I have been noticing for the past fifteen years that our party has been drifting from its initial vision of leading this country to a genuine democracy. On many occasions, I have attempted to draw the attention of party hierarchy to this sad phenomenon but to no avail.” Tamanjong states in her resignation letter.

 

She stated however, that all is not lost, that the SDF can regain the enviable position it once occupied in the hearts of Cameroonians.

 

“Having tried unsuccessfully to make the party revert to the spirit, ideals and commitments of the early 90s, I therefore resign from the post of Secretary General of the SDF party. However, I still remain committed to the party and I am willing to contribute in many ways to move the party forward. I would like to thank everybody who in one way or the other assisted me in accomplishing my duties as Secretary General. The SDF will for long remain dear to me.” Tamanjong said.

 

Before leaving, Tamanjong suggested that the post of Secretary General be made elective as was the case before the 2006 convention. State subventions, she said, should be used to fund party structures in order to revamp and revitalize the party. She asked that the socialist women and youths be given a sense of belonging in the party thereby strengthening it.

 

 

 John Fru Ndi has lauded the contribution of Elisabeth Tamanjong to the party. Fru Ndi’s decision to retain her as the SDF scribe during the October 2012 elective congress in Bamenda was a tough one. He told her openly that she was daring party hierarchy through her actions.

Tamanjong becomes the third SDF Secretary General to fallout with party hierarchy after Siga Asanga who questioned the management of party funds donated by militants in the diaspora, and later Prof. Tazoache Asonganyi, who resigned abruptly in 2006. This latest resignation of Prof. Tamanjong is once again exposing the SDF as an organization loosing grip of the center.
