The men, who had allegedly stolen a new tricycle from a shop at Marché des Pommes, were heading for the New Bell Post Office when a policeman and the shop owner on a commercial motorcycle interrupted them. A group of traders and passersby following on motorcycles and on foot almost beat the suspects to death.

The lone policeman who could not stop the angry mob was assisted by soldiers before other policemen arrived. Even so, the mob, with the help of shoes and clubs, continued thrashing the suspects. Meanwhile, traffic was held up for close to an hour and a half. The suspects were later rescued and taken for further investigations at the Douala Second Public Security Police Station in New Bell.
